Top 5: High Protein Ice Cream Review

Top 5: High Protein Ice Cream Review

Today we had an ice cream social in the studio to see if the new high protein and low calorie ice creams really live up to the hype. Who among us hasn’t sat down in front of the TV and devoured a pint of ice cream? We regret it, hate ourselves and swear it will never happen again! On Weight Watchers Connect, there is an abundance of posts about ladies and gentlemen, losing all reason and eating a pint of Halo Top, but not regretting it because it was only 240 calories for the whole pint.

We tried to buy only plain chocolate ice creams to keep the competition fair, however not all of the brands had plain chocolate on offer at my local Kroger. We ended up testing Ben & Jerry’s Moo-phoria Chocolate Milk & Cookies, Enlightened Chocolate Peanut Butter, Breyer’s Delights Creamy Chocolate, Halo Top Dairy Free Chocolate and Simple Truth Low Cow Chocolate. I made a mistake when I bought Dairy Free Halo Top. It was not my intention to test a vegan ice cream. When I got back to the studio I realized I grabbed the wrong kind! We ate it and reviewed it, but if this was a real scientific test, the results would have to be thrown out! Sorry dear reader, we are not scientists, just ladies who like ice cream!

Can these “diet” ice creams really hit the spot when you want a tasty treat? Let’s find out!

#5 Halo Top Dairy Free Chocolate

70 Calories per 1/2 Cup, 280 Calories per pint, 3 WW Points per serving, $3.82

70 Calories per 1/2 Cup, 280 Calories per pint, 3 WW Points per serving, $3.82

Our general conclusion for Halo Top Dairy Free Chocolate was that it was terrible! It was bitter and reminded us of the taste of the wooden stick in an ice cream popsicle. It has a strong coconut flavor which would have been ok if it was not so overwhelmingly bitter. The chocolate taste that you would expect from an ice cream was also a bit too artificial. One of our taste testers said it tasted like cardboard. Again, we did not mean to taste a dairy free ice cream so it is a bit unfair to compare this version of Halo Top to the rest. I will say that based on flavor alone, it was not something that I would ever want to eat again.

#4 Enlightened Chocolate Peanut butter

100 Calories per 1/2 Cup, 400 Calories per pint, 3 WW Points per serving, $5.89

100 Calories per 1/2 Cup, 400 Calories per pint, 3 WW Points per serving, $5.89

Enlightened Chocolate Peanut Butter had a silky almost pudding texture which most of us liked. However, like Halo Top, there was a strange bitter taste that we couldn’t quite figure out? Maybe it is from the protein that is added? There are large chunks of peanut butter swirled through the chocolate ice cream that is very nutty but also almost too bitter. We felt that it needed some sweetness to offset the strong bitter taste. It was not terrible, but at the highest price point, it was not worth it.

#3 Breyer’s Delights Creamy Chocolate

90 Calories per 1/2 Cup, 270 Calories per pint, 2 WW Points per serving, $4.49

90 Calories per 1/2 Cup, 270 Calories per pint, 2 WW Points per serving, $4.49

Breyer’s Delights Creamy Chocolate was interesting for a few reasons. It was very fluffy and airy, almost spongy or bubbly? Also, of all of the ice creams we tasted, this one melted surprisingly fast. This would not be an ice cream that I would want to make a cone out of. It had a chalky flavor that was unpleasant. I was expecting more from Breyer’s. The amount of calories per serving was great, however I am not sure it would hit the spot?

#2 Ben & Jerry’s Moo-phoria Chocolate Milk & Cookies

140 Calories per 1/2 Cup, 560 Calories per pint, 6 WW Points per serving, $4.99

140 Calories per 1/2 Cup, 560 Calories per pint, 6 WW Points per serving, $4.99

We all agreed that Ben & Jerry’s Moo-phoria Chocolate Milk & Cookies tasted like real ice cream! This may be because of all of the brands we tried, it has the highest amount of calories. There were chunks of cookies that added texture which we all enjoyed. It is creamy and the cookie bits were tasty. It was only after we ate the ice cream and were discussing how much we liked it, that all of us noticed a slight artificial sweetener aftertaste. We would definitely try more versions of the Moo-phoria Brand.

#1 Simple Truth Low Cow Chocolate Milk & Cookies

60 Calories per 1/2 Cup, 240 Calories per pint, 2 WW Points per serving, $3.49

60 Calories per 1/2 Cup, 240 Calories per pint, 2 WW Points per serving, $3.49

Here is a real surprise! The cheapest AND the lowest in calories was the best! I honestly would have never tried this brand had we not had this taste test! The Kroger Simple Truth Low Cow Chocolate was the best of the bunch. It was smooth and rich with no artificial aftertaste or chalkiness. It had the best real chocolate flavor and had the most realistic ice cream texture. All of our taste testers could not believe how much this brand did not taste like “diet” ice cream. Way to go Simple Truth, you have made a believer out of all of my testers today! I am excited to try more of the flavors from this brand. After looking at their website I can confirm that they have the following flavors - Vanilla, Chocolate (tested), Sea Salt Carmel, Mint Chocolate Chip, Birthday Cake and Lemon Cake.
